starb Dr. phil. John Thorbjanarson, Assistant Professor, am 14.2.2010 in Delhi / Indien.
Er wurde nur 52 Jahre alt.
John Thorbjanarson, geboren am 23.März
1957, hat sich schon als Kind für Reptilien begeistert. Aufgewachsen ist er in
Old Tappan, New Jersey und hier ging er auch zur
Schule (Northern Valley Regional High School). Seinen Master machte er im College
von Cornell, N.J., Jahrgang 1979. 1991 promovierte an der University of Florida
bei Prof. Wayne King, der schon damals ein international anerkannter Experte
besonders für Krokodile war. Als Herpetologe war John Thorbjanarson für die
Wildlife Conservation Society (vormals New York Zoological Society ) seit 1993 tätig
und bereiste für die Gesellschaft alle Länder dieser Welt, in der die
Gesellschaft arbeitete, Artenschutzprojekte unterhielt und von denen John Thorbjanarson
viele selbst betreute und noch viel mehr initiierte. Daneben war er auch noch
als „Adjunct Assistant Professor“ an der Columbia
Universität, New York City tätig.
Das Ergebnis seiner umfangreichen wissenschaftlichen Tätigkeit ist in einer Vielzahl von Publikationen festgehalten. Schon frühzeitig ist John Thorbjanarson in die IUCN / SSC „Crocodile Specialist Group“ (C.S.G.) berufen und dort als Mitglied des CSG Steering Committee in vielfacher Funktion, u. A. für die Einordnung bedrohter Krokodilarten in die Rote Liste der IUCN verantwortlich tätig gewesen.
Schon früh arbeitete John Thorbjanarson gemeinsam mit dem ebenfalls verstorbenen John L. Behler und Peter Brazaitis daran, Artenschutzprojekte für den kritisch bedrohten China-Alligator ( Alligator sinensis ) zu initiieren und entwickeln und reiste aus diesem Grunde immer wieder nach China. Die derzeitigen Erfolge in einem Wiederansiedlungsprojekt für China-Alligatoren sind nicht zuletzt seinem unermüdlichen Einsatz zu verdanken.
Die erfolgreichen ex-situ – Zuchtprojekte für das Orinoko-Krokodil (Crocodylus intermedius) und die nachfolgende Auswilderung halbwüchsiger Krokodile in Venezuela
ist letztlich auch zum großen Teil Verdienst vonJohn Thorbjanarson und einheimischen Herpetologen und Freiwilligen, die John auf seine unnachahmliche Art für den Artenschutz zu begeistern vermochte. Wegweisend auch sein anhaltender Einsatz in Kuba für den Erhalt des Kuba-Krokodils ( Crocodylus rhombifer) und den Schutz der noch immer schwindenden, winzigen Lebensräume sowie gegen den zunehmenden Hybridisierungsdruck.
In den letzten Jahren konzentrierte sich John Thorbjanarson’s Arbeit zunehmend auf den Schutz der kritisch bedrohten asiatischen Krokodilarten Siam-Krokodil (Crocodylus siamensis) und Ganges – Gavial (Gavialis gangeticus). Die Situation beider Arten im Freileben ist geradezu verzweifelt. Die winzigen Restbestände des Siam-Krokodils in Kambodscha, Laos, Vietnam und Indonesien sind nach wie vor im höchsten Maße bedroht. „John T.“, wie ihn seine Freunde der Einfachheit wegen nannten, war zutiefst davon überzeugt, dass das Überleben der Art nur gesichert werden kann, wenn die lokale Bevölkerung, die mit freilebenden Krokodilen leben muss, in die Schutzbemühungen einbezogen wird. Gleiches gilt für den Ganges-Gavial.
Wer so in der Welt herumreist und erfolgreich für den Internationalen Artenschutz arbeitet, muss mit Menschen aller verschiedenen Nationalitäten und Mentalitäten umgehen können.
John Thorbjanarson war so ein Mann; im gelang es aufgrund seiner Persönlichkeit mit offenen Armen und unvoreingenommen auf Menschen zu zugehen und dem es trotz seiner anerkannten fachlichen Autorität leicht fiel, aus Kollegen Freunde zu machen.
Ich (R.S.) bitte, mir hierzu einige persönliche Bemerkungen zu gestatten. Seit ich John Thorbjanarson erstmals an seinem Wohnort in Gainesville / Florida begegnete, hat sich eine Freundschaft entwickelt. „John T“, der immer bereit war, sein großes Wissen und seine große Erfahrung mit Anderen zu teilen, war einer der wichtigsten Ratgeber, der meinen Freund Ludwig Trutnau und mir auch bei unserem Buchprojekt über Krokodile wesentlich half. Seine Unterstützung bei den Artenschutzprojekten, an denen ich arbeitete, war stets essentiell. Wir sind uns immer wieder bei passender Gelegenheit begegnet und als mich „John T“ gemeinsam mit seinem engen Freund Dr. Kent Vliet im Jahre 2006 in Frankfurt besuchte, verbrachten wir gemeinsam ein paar schöne entspannte Tage, die ich nicht vergessen werde.
Der Zweitautor (H.D.P) hatte leider nicht die Möglichkeit den Verstorbenen persönlich kennen zulernen, aber er korrespondierte regelmäßig mit ihn. In den letzten Wochen hatte er ihn noch zur Teilnahme an einer Schildkrötentagung im Allwetterzoo Münster eingeladen. Leider ließ es der stramme Zeitplan von „John T“ nicht zu, dass er die Tagung besuchen konnte; er wäre sicherlich eine Bereicherung gewesen, zumal er sich in China nicht nur um den Schutz und Erhalt des China-Alligators (Alligator sinensis) bemühte, sondern auch maßgeblich bei der Initiierung der Schutz und Zuchtzusammenführung der letzten Yangtze-Riesenweichschildkröten (Raphetus swinhoei) beteiligt gewesen ist. Darüber hinaus war es ihm schon seit Jahren ein Anliegen, sich auch um ein koordiniertes Schutzprojekt für die Goldkopf-Scharnierschildkröte (Cuora aurocapitata) einzusetzen. In diesem Zusammenhang kooperierte er auch mit dem Internationalen Zentrum für Schildkrötenschutz (I.Z.S.) im Allwetterzoo Münster und dem Gründer und Leiter der Station, Elmar Meier.
Wenn man sich sein umfangreiches Schaffenswerk näher ansieht, stellt man leicht fest, dass Krokodile zwar seine absoluten Lieblingstiere waren, dass er sich im Verlaufe seines Lebens aber auch intensiv um die Erforschung und den Schutz von Anakondas, Nashornleguanen, Schienenschildkröten (Podocnemis unifilis.) und diverser weiterer Arten gekümmert hat. Leider hat er die Drucklegung seines letzten großen Werkes, ein Buch über den China-Alligator (Alligator sinensis), dass er zusammen mit seinem chinesischen Kooperationspartner Prof. Wang verfasst hat, nicht mehr erleben können. Es wird erst in den nächsten Wochen erscheinen.
Mehr als bezeichnend ist es, dass der Tod John T mitten in der Arbeit ereilte. Nach einem Vortrag beim Wildlife Institute of India in Delhi brach er unvermittelt zusammen und starb im Krankenhaus, vermutlich an den Folgen einer übergangenen Malaria. Er hinterlässt seine Eltern und eine Schwester.
Mit John Thorbjanarson verliert der Internationale Natur- und Artenschutz einer seiner profiliertesten und engagiertesten Verfechter. Die Wissenschaft verliert einen außerordentlich kenntnisreichen und kommunikativen Herpetologen. Und viele Artenschützer und Wissenschaftler auf der Welt verlieren einen verlässlichen Ratgeber und Freund. Wir werden John Thorbjanarson nicht vergessen.
